Effects of nutritional conditions on lipid production by cyanobacteria Anais da ABC (AABC)
CORDEIRO,RAQUEL S.; VAZ,IZABELA C.D.; MAGALHÃES,SÉRGIA M.S.; BARBOSA,FRANCISCO A.R..
ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the effects of the culturing media and the levels of nitrogen and phosphorus on the growth, biomass productivity and lipid production of four species of Microcystis (M. novacekii, M. aeruginosa, M panniformis and M. protocystis). The lipid extract was obtained by refluxing with dichloromethane (Soxhlet). The biomass and biomass productivity yields were maximized with ASM-1 medium treatment enriched with nitrogen and/or phosphorus (0.25-0.65 g/L and 25-50.7 mg/L d-1, respectively). The lipid extract yields from M. panniformis and M. novacekii were inversely correlated with the concentration of nitrogen and directly correlated with the concentration of phosphorus (35.8 % and 31.7 %). The lipid extract yield from M....

Genetic polymorphism in brazilian microcystis spp. (Cyanobacteria) toxic and non-toxic through RFLP-PCR of the cpcBA-IGS BABT
Bittencourt-Oliveira,Maria do Carmo; Cunha,Maristela Casé Costa; Moura,Ariadne do Nascimento.
The escalating occurrence of cyanobacterial toxic blooms demands a better understanding of genetic variability as an auxiliary expedient in species identification, collaborating with the monitoring of water destined to public supply. This study aimed at the unraveling of genetic polymorphism in the toxic and nontoxic strains of Microcystis (Cyanobacteria) species, isolated from diverse Brazilian localities through the RFLP-PCR technique applied to the c-phycocyanin encoding operon and its intergenic spacer (cpcBA-IGS). Eighteen strains belonging to M. aeruginosa, M. panniformis, M. protocystis and M. wesenbergii, plus two other unidentified strains, were analyzed by means of the morphological and molecular data. The molecular data constituted three groups...

Influence of temperature and nutrient content on lipid production in freshwater microalgae cultures Anais da ABC (AABC)
BOHNENBERGER,JULIANA E.; CROSSETTI,LUCIANE O..
The production of biomass by microalgae is considered a clean alternative compared to other plant crops that require large areas for cultivation and that generate environmental impacts. This study evaluated the influence of temperature and nutrients on lipid contents of cultured species of freshwater microalgae, with a view toward using these lipids for biodiesel production. Two strains of Monoraphidium contortum, a culture containing Chlorella vulgaris and Desmodesmus quadricauda and another strain of Microcystis aeruginosa were maintained in the laboratory for six days, in five culture media: modified ASM-1 (control, with high concentrations of phosphate and nitrate; phosphorus-deficient; non-limiting phosphate; nitrogen-deficient; and non-limiting...

Physiological and Metabolic Responses of Freshwater and Brackish-Water Strains of Microcystis aeruginosa Acclimated to a Salinity Gradient: Insight into Salt Tolerance ArchiMer
Georges Des Aulnois, Maxime; Roux, Pauline; Caruana, Amandine; Réveillon, Damien; Briand, Enora; Hervé, Fabienne; Savar, Veronique; Bormans, Myriam; Amzil, Zouher; Atomi, Haruyuki.
Proliferation of microcystin (MC)-producing Microcystis aeruginosa in brackish waters has been described in several locations and represents a new concern for public and environmental health. While the impact of a sudden salinity increase on M. aeruginosa physiology has been studied, less is known about the mechanisms involved in salt tolerance after acclimation. This study aims to compare the physiological responses of two strains of M. aeruginosa (PCC 7820 and PCC 7806), which were isolated from contrasted environments, to increasing salinities. After acclimation, growth and MC production rates were determined and metabolomic analyses were conducted. For both strains, salinity decreased the biovolume, growth, and MC production rates and induced the...

Preliminary studies on primary productivity in the Winam Bay of L. Victoria OceanDocs
Kibaara, D..
In 1984, water temperature and pH in the Winam Bay fluctuated little between the months. At any given time, the difference between surface and bottom temperature did not exceed 1.6 C. Secchi disc visibilities were persistently low during the year with a maximum value of 0.71 m. Oxygen concentrations within the water column fell sharply below 1.5m. The highest primary productivity by algae measured was 1.26g at 1200 hours. Microcystis was the most abundant algae encountered in the lake water.

Some limnological characteristics of the lower Sondu-Miriu River, Kenya OceanDocs
Mwashote, B.M.; Shimbira, W..
Chemical and physical investigations of water on a 10 km section of the Sondu-Miriu river in Kenya were conducted in 1988-1990. They revealed no significant spatial variation between three sampling stations. Variation existed between the waters of a floodpool and the river. Flooding had a general diluting effect on the nutrients. All the physical and chemical parameters investigated were within tolerable limits of water quality according to WHO criteria for drinking water, fisheries and other aquatic life. A total of 22 phytoplankton and 9 zooplankton genera were recorded. The algae Microcystis (cyanobacteria) and Navicula (diatom) were dominant. Mean densities were 283 cells or colonies per ml for phytoplankters and...
